Sen. Pat Steadman and Rep. Dave Young were the recipients of the Legislator of the Year awards at the 2014 Colorado Nonprofit Association luncheon Friday.
Hosted by the Colorado Nonprofit Association, the luncheon recognizes the achievements and contributions of the nonprofit community and the award nominees. State Treasurer Walker Stapleton praised Colorado’s nonprofits, noting the role they played in last year’s flood-and-fire recovery efforts.
Gov. John Hicklenlooper presented the Nonprofit Impact Award to Metropolitan State University President Stephen Jordan. Since he took over, the institution has gained university status and offered master’s degree programs. Jordan championed legislation signed into law into 2103 that allows undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition at all state institutions. Jordan tonight received the Sol Trujillo National Lifetime Leadership Award from the Latin American Education Foundation.

Stapleton presented the award to Steadman, a Denver Democrat, who was recognized for his work with hospice and palliative care providers. The Denver Democrat fought to have the state Medicaid program provide a reimbursement rate increase to hospices hit hard by sequestration cuts and reduced funding from individual donors, according to the association brochure.
Young, a Greeley Democrat, was recognized for his continued dedication to the nonprofit community. He regularly hosts a forum with nonprofit agencies, and is an advocate of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Secretary of State Scott Gessler presented him with the award.
